Garrigill kun je vanuit het westen alleen bereiken door de Pennines en dan alleen nog na een stevige beklimming van de Hartside. Genesteld tussen de Penninische heuvels was Garrigill eens een bloeiende gemeenschap met meer dan 1000 inwoners. In deze gemeenschap werkten de meeste bewoners in de loodmijnbouw. Tegenwoordig wordt in Garrigill het meeste werk gevonden in de meer traditionele vormen van industrie, zoals de landbouw enn heeft Garrigill net iets meer dan 200 inwoners.
Met een dorpswinkel, een pub en een overschot aan frisse lucht is Garrigill een uitstekende plaats om je benen even te laten rusten, evenals het op korte afstand gelegen naburige marktplaatsje Alston.
