Voor de Eerste Wereldoorlog liep de grens tussen Oostenrijk en Italië over deze berg. De Marmolada maakte tijdens de oorlog deel uit van de frontlinie. Zowel de Oostenrijkse als Italiaanse soldaten waren verscholen in diepe tunnels in de gletsjers en rotsen. In de strenge winter van 1916 viel maar liefst acht tot tien meter sneeuw, en op de Fedaiapas zelfs twaalf meter. Hierdoor was er een verhoogd lawinegevaar. Tijdens een lawine op 11 november 1916 kwamen 123 Oostenrijkse soldaten om en werden er 51 vermist. Maar een maand later werd dit nog overtroffen; op 13 december 1916 veroorzaakte een lawine op de Punta Penia 300 doden aan Oostenrijkse zijde.
