Metaponto is het best bekend voor de ruïnes van de oude Griekse stad Metapontum. Deze stad was ook de plaats waar de meeste van de volgelingen van Pythagoras waren ondergedoken.
Pythagoras deed veel meer dan het beoefenen van wiskunde. Hij creëerde ook een broederschap op basis van zijn filosofie. De broederschap werd politiek actief, maar dat liep slecht af. Ze regeerde het grootste deel van Sicilië. Maar de mensen werden hun aanpak moe en zij werden geconfronteerd met rebellie. De Leden van de broederschap vluchtten en zochten hun toevlucht in Metaponto. Hier stierven de meesten nadat de stad werd belegerd en in brand gestoken.
Het verhaal is dat Philolaos, lid van de broederschap, vluchtte en het heilige boek van Pythagoras kon buiten smokkelen. Uiteindelijk belandde het boek en de kennis van Pythagoras in Plato's handen.
