Het natuurgebied de Malpie is een heidegebied met tal van uitblazingslaagtes die ontstonden tijdens het gure klimaat van de laatse ijstijd, die dit gebied tot een toendra maakten zoals we dit nu kennen in Siberië. Het gebied ligt ook vol met vennen die onstonden nadat het grondwater steeg en de uitblazingsgaten opvulden. Pas na 1900 werden grote delen van de heide bebost. Het natuurgebied de Malpie ligt tussen Valkenswaard, Borkel en Schaft.
