Het Kerkplein was tot begin 19e eeuw het kerkhof. Zoals vroeger gebruikelijk werden belangrijke doden in de kerk begraven en de overige gelovigen in de hof rondom de kerk, vandaar de benaming 'kerkhof'. Toen Napoleon het begraven in en rond de kerk niet langer toestond, moesten de overledenen buiten de bebouwde kom begraven worden. Hierdoor kwam er een einde aan dit gebruik en werd er buiten de wal een nieuwe begraafplaats aangelegd.
