Willem Drees was een Nederlands politicus voor de SDAP en de latere PvdA. Hij was minister-president van Nederland van 1948 tot 1958, en wordt door menigeen beschouwd als een van de belangrijkste naoorlogse Nederlandse politici. Onder zijn leiding vonden zowel de dekolonisatie van Nederlands-Indië als de wederopbouw van Nederland plaats.
Hij was de initiator van diverse sociale wetten. Als minister van Sociale Zaken legde hij al in 1947 met de Noodwet Ouderdomsvoorziening de grondslag van sociale wetgevingen. Vandaar ook de uitdrukking: Hij trekt van Drees (waarmee wordt bedoeld dat iemand ouderdomspensioen ontvangt)
