In de Nederlanden leidde de Beeldenstorm (1566) niet alleen tot vernieling van kerken en kloosters, maar plaatselijk ook tot fysiek geweld tegen katholieke geestelijken. Een duidelijk voorbeeld van een “lynchpartij avant la lettre” is de moord op de 19 Martelaren van Gorkum: katholieke priesters en religieuzen die in 1572 door calvinistische opstandelingen werden gevangengezet en in Brielle werden opgehangen omdat zij hun geloof niet wilden herroepen.
De gevangenneming in Gorkum vond plaats in juni 1572 en de lynching in Den Briel op 9 juli 1572.
