Het Lincoln Memorial is gebouwd ter ere van de 16e president van de Verenigde Staten, Abraham Lincoln, door architect Henry Bacon en beeldhouwer Daniel Chester French. De schilder van de muurschilderingen in het interieur was Jules Guerin.
Het bevat een groot zittend beeld van Abraham Lincoln en inscripties van twee bekende toespraken van Lincoln. Het monument is de locatie geweest van vele beroemde toespraken, waaronder Martin Luther Kings "I Have a Dream"-toespraak, uitgesproken op 28 augustus 1963 tijdens de bijeenkomst aan het einde van de Mars op Washington voor Werkgelegenheid en Vrijheid.
