Els Carpats constitueixen la part oriental del sistema muntanyós central d'Europa, que comprèn també els Alps, que en serien la part occidental. També són coneguts com a Alps orientals o Alps de Transsilvània.
Els Carpats segurament s'anomenen així per la tribu dàcia dels carps, que hi vivien al vessant oriental, a Moldàvia, el nom dels quals podria provenir d'un antic terme indoeuropeu que significa 'pedra'.
