Det er det næstældste nationale naturreservat i den Wallonske Region (efter de Høje Vener). Denne status blev givet i 1969 for at sikre bevaringen af et forbløffende landskab af dunede birkeskove på højmoser. Der er også en typisk boreal fauna og flora.
Stedet ligger på en højde af omkring 550 m og er en del af Freyr-skovplateauet, nogle kilometer nordøst for byen Saint-Hubert.
