Kommanderiet af Pitzemburg blev grundlagt omkring 1200 af "Ordnen af Hospitalsriddere af Vor Frue af Tyskland i Jerusalem" (Tyske Orden) under korstogene i Palæstina.
Fra de første byggeaktiviteter er der intet kendt. Et gravure fra 1580 viser en bygning med gård og kapel. I 1664 blev en portbygning opført i blå sten. Den var forbundet med kapellet.
Under den franske tid i Belgien blev Pitzemburg i 1794 beslaglagt og solgt som national ejendom. I 1822 blev kapellet opkøbt og helt nedrevet. Byen Mechelen købte alt det øvrige i 1827. Den barokke tidligere bolig for Orden blev brugt fra 1832 til kommunal undervisning.
Med materiale fra den i 1836 nedrevne portbygning fik de bygget to indgangspavilloner.
