Muligvis omkring 1100 blev der på stedet for Godelieves martyrdød grundlagt et kloster for benediktinerinder. Ifølge legenden blev klosteret grundlagt af Edith, datteren fra Bertolfs andet ægteskab. Hun var blindfødt, men kunne se, da hun vaskede sine øjne med vand fra brønden, hvor Godelieve blev druknet.
