Østen er den østligste kommune i Landkreis Cuxhaven i Niedersachsen. Kommunen tilhører Samtkommunen Hemmoor.
I udløbsområdet af Elben og Østen bosatte en germansk stamme, Chaukerne, sig allerede før Kristi fødsel. Lavlandsbosætningerne på vadehavet bestod indtil det 12. århundrede. På det tidspunkt begyndte den planmæssige dyrkning af marsk og mose; der opstod diger med sluser til dræning og vandafledning af jorden, de flyder, vandløb og grave.
