Byen Gladbeck ligger i det nordlige Ruhrområde i den nordvestlige del af delstaten Nordrhein-Westfalen og er en stor kommune under Kreis Recklinghausen i regeringsdistriktet Münster. Oprindeligt var Gladbeck en lille landsby, indtil kulminedriften begyndte i slutningen af det 19. århundrede. Den udviklede sig til en typisk minearbejderby i Ruhrområdet og fik også byretter i 1919. Under Anden Verdenskrig blev den stærkt ødelagt.
