Den første skriftlige omtale stammer fra 1131, da klosteret Aroldessen for augustiner-nonne blev grundlagt. Fra 1655 til 1918 var byen residens for greverne og prinsene af Waldeck-Pyrmont og senere hovedstad i den frie stat Waldeck. I 1929 mistede den sin uafhængighed efter at være blevet annekteret af Preussen.
