Fire Ursuliner - herunder to døtre af rigsgrafen von Nesselrode-Reichenstein fra Herten - ankommer den 21. januar fra det kolde stammekloster i Dorsten. For at uddanne unge kvinder i den kristne tro åbner de en gratis grundskole og en pigeskole med internat i "Det Høje Hus" på Blindestraße (i dag: Ursulastraße). Efter erhvervelsen af yderligere bygninger bliver "Det Høje Hus" ombygget til klosterkirke. I dag driver Ursulinerne et betydningsfuldt gymnasium og en realskole.
