Tårnets byggeri begyndte den 28. juli 1574. I 1666 og 1683 blev tårnet ramt af brand, og siden da har det været uden tag.
Tårnet har en kvadratisk grundplan i form af et solidt prisme med otte etager og er 57 meter højt. Tårnet har et scenisk galleri 29 meter over jorden. Hjørnerne og den højeste etage er dekoreret med diamant sgraffito. På den sydvestlige side er der en solur. I alcoven over indgangen er der et cirkulært relief, et symbol på Kristus.
