Das Karwendel ist eine Gebirgsgruppe der Nördlichen Kalkalpen. Es liegt zum größeren Teil in Tirol, zum kleineren in Bayern; die Grenze verläuft über die Nördliche Karwendelkette und durch das Vorkarwendel. Vier große Gebirgsketten ziehen sich von West nach Ost; hinzu kommen zahlreiche Seitenketten und -gruppen und nach Norden ein weitläufiges Vorgebirge. Seinen Namen trägt das Karwendel nach dem altdeutschen Familiennamen Gerwentil, erstmals 1280 erwähnt, der ursprünglich nur auf das Karwendeltal bei Scharnitz beschränkt war. Hermann von Barth dehnte den Begriff im Zuge der Alpenerschließung im 19. Jahrhundert auf das gesamte Gebiet aus.
