Er stammt von Payot, was ursprünglich die wallonische Bezeichnung für einen Soldaten aus der eigenen Region war, im Gegensatz zu den fremden österreichischen Soldaten. Das Wort ist eine Ableitung von pays (Land). Das Wort Pajottenland wurde vom Lennikser Anwalt Frans-Joseph De Gronckel erfunden. Er verwendete das Wort Pajottenland unter dem Pseudonym Franciscus Josephus Twyfelloos in einer romantischen und humorvollen Schrift, die in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts veröffentlicht wurde. Er erwähnte den Namen Pajottenland zum ersten Mal in einem Zeitungsfeiulliton im 1845. Damit schuf er nicht nur einen Namen für diese Region, sondern auch eine Eigenart und ein Selbstbewusstsein.
