Das Ittertal ist ein relativ schmales Tal, das durch den Itterbach geformt wurde, der sich seinen Weg durch das Kempische Plateau bahnt. Die tiefe Einschnitt des Itterbachs und des Wijshagerbachs sorgt nicht nur für größere Höhendifferenzen, sondern auch für eine große Vielfalt an Landschaften: gewundene Bäche mit feuchten Mooren, Wiesen mit Baumkanten, Laubwälder aus Eichen und Birken, aber auch angepflanzte Nadelwälder.
