Gais liegt zwischen Teufen und Appenzell an der Strecke der Appenzeller Bahnen. Bekannter Ausflugsort ist der Gäbris auf 1251 m ü. M. Gais ist der Endpunkt der Eisenbahnlinie Altstätten–Gais. Von Altstätten im Rheintal gelangt man über den Pass Stoss AR über eine direkte Strassenverbindung nach Gais.
Die Nachbargemeinden sind Trogen, Bühler, Schlatt-Haslen, Appenzell, Rüte, Eichberg und Altstätten.
