Payerne ist eine politische Gemeinde und Hauptort des Distrikts Broye-Vully im Kanton Waadt in der Schweiz. Der frühere deutsche Name Peterlingen für das Städtchen wird heute nur noch selten, insbesondere mit Bezug zur Abtei gebraucht.
Payerne liegt auf 456 m ü. M., 17 km westlich der Stadt Freiburg . Es erstreckt sich beidseits der kanalisierten Broye, an deren Austritt aus dem Molassehügelland des Waadtländer und Freiburger Mittellandes in die breite Broyeebene.
