Früher war auf dem Wappen Steinmaurs in Rot ein Eber. Dieses Tier wurde aber bei einer Gemeindeversammlung durch den Steinbock ersetzt.
Steinmaur liegt im Zürcher Unterland und ist eine sogenannte suburbane Wohngemeinde und gehört zum Ballungsraum Zürich. Die Luftdistanz nach Zürich beträgt 15 km. Von den 939 ha Fläche entfallen 57 % auf Landwirtschaft, 29 % auf Wald, 5 % auf Verkehr und 8 % auf Siedlungen.
