Der Flughafen war der erste Flugplatz in Nikosia und wurde schon zur Zeit der britischen Herrschaft erbaut. Er ist nach dem 1974 beim türkischen Einmarsch gefallenen Piloten Fehmi Ercan benannt.
Im Februar 2015 wurde der Bau eines weiteren Terminals angekündigt. Es soll eine Kapazität von rund fünf Millionen Passagieren im Jahr haben, 220 Millionen Euro kosten und bis 2019 fertiggestellt werden.
