Harzgerode ist eine Stadt im Landkreis Harz im Land Sachsen-Anhalt. Gemeinsam mit den Ortsteilen Alexisbad, Mägdesprung und Silberhütte wurde Harzgerode im Dezember 1998 ein staatlich anerkannter Erholungsort.
Harzgerode liegt im sachsen-anhaltischen Teil des Mittelgebirges Harz. Es befindet sich dabei im sog. Unterharz, der morphologisch aus meist bewaldeten Hochflächen auf Höhen zwischen ca. 250 und ca. 500 m NHN besteht, die durch das Tal der Selke und der zuführenden Seitentäler zergliedert werden. Die Selke entspringt westlich der Gemeindegrenze Harzgerodes und durchfließt es in ost-nordöstlicher Richtung. An den Talhängen befinden sich zahlreiche Felsen aus Tonschiefern, Grauwacken, Kalksteinen und Diabasen. Harzgerode ist namensgebend für die regionalgeologische Einheit der Harzgeröder Zone.
