Sie wird auch Waldstadt genannt, denn ringsum dehnen sich Waldgebiete aus – südlich der Naturpark Barnim, nördlich das Biosphärenreservat Schorfheide-Chorin mit dem Totalreservat Plagefenn. Die Gemeinde besitzt seit dem 14. Jahrhundert Waldflächen. Von den 1468 ha sind etwa 1000 ha Erholungswald, 271 ha Naturschutzgebiete und ökologisch bedeutsame Lebensräume. Der etwa 1080 ha große Stadtforst dient zugleich als Wirtschaftswald. Den Begriff Waldstadt prägte der Stadthistoriker Rudolf Schmidt, verwendeten zahlreiche Publikationen und Postkarten des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts.
Bis zur Wende bestimmte hauptsächlich die Schwerindustrie den Stadtcharakter, wovon auch die Namen einiger Ortsteile, wie Eisenspalterei, Kupferhammer und Messingwerk zeugen.
