Die Ems ist ein 371 km langer Fluss zur Nordsee im Nordwesten von Deutschland. Sie ist der längste Fluss, der in Deutschland entspringt und ins Meer mündet sowie zwischen Quelle und Mündung seinen Namen beibehält.
Die Ems entspringt in der Senne bei Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock im Landesteil Westfalen, fließt zunächst durch die Westfälische Bucht in nordwestlicher Richtung in etwa parallel zum Teutoburger Wald und ab der Landesgrenze zu Niedersachsen, zwischen Rheine und Salzbergen, dann in Nordrichtung bis zur Nordsee. Ab dem Dollart bildet die Ems die teilweise umstrittene Grenze zur niederländischen Provinz Groningen. Sie mündet etwa 27 Kilometer nordwestlich von Emden zwischen Pilsum und Eemshaven in die Nordsee.
