Ostfriesland liegt an der Nordseeküste und ist die nordwestlichste Region Deutschlands. Im Allgemeinen wird unterschieden zwischen Ostfriesland im historisch-politischen Sinne (um das es im vorliegenden Artikel geht) und dem geografischen Begriff Ostfriesland, der zuweilen weiter gefasst ist (siehe dazu den Artikel Ost-Friesland). Das Ost in Ostfriesland bezieht sich darauf, dass es im östlichen Teil des alten Friesland liegt – im Gegensatz zum Westfriesland genannten Teil (der Provinz Friesland und der nordholländischen Region Westfriesland in den Niederlanden). Neben diesen beiden Frieslanden gibt es das als Nordfriesland bezeichnete Gebiet im nordwestlichen Schleswig-Holstein, das jedoch außerhalb der im Heiligen Römischen Reich als Friesland bezeichneten Gebiete liegt.
