Hier begann 1798 Napoleon mit seiner Armee einen Angriff auf Ägypten. Nicht weniger als 200 Wissenschaftler schlossen sich den Truppen an, um die Gelegenheit, sehr opportunistisch, zu nutzen, um in Ägypten "Informationen" zu sammeln. Eine Person, die sich ebenfalls anschließen wollte, war der berühmte Wissenschaftler und Entdecker Alexander von Humboldt. Er versuchte, sie über Marseille zu erreichen, scheiterte jedoch.
