Es wurde ab 1878 vom Staat auf Grundstücken errichtet, die er selbst von der Gemeinde und Privatpersonen gekauft hatte. Er wurde 1890 fertiggestellt. Er beherbergt die Gebeine von etwa 3000 französischen und deutschen Soldaten. Gemäß einer Vereinbarung vom 1. März 1951 zwischen dem Ministerium für Kriegsveteranen (Bureau Sépultures) und dem Komitee muss letzteres die (kostspieligen) Kosten für die Instandhaltung des Denkmals tragen. Die Terrasse musste 1999 komplett erneuert werden und kann auf Anfrage beim Hausmeister besichtigt werden.
