Professor Colin Maclaurin erhielt 1744 eine ungewöhnliche Frage von zwei presbyterianischen Priestern, die mit einer statistischen Frage kämpften: Alexander Webster und Robert Wallace. Sie wollten schätzen, wie viele Priester jedes Jahr sterben würden. Diese Zahl benötigten sie, weil sie einen Pensionsfonds für die Witwen ihrer Priester einrichten wollten und weil sie bestimmen wollten, wie viel Beitrag pro Person pro Jahr zu zahlen sei. Dies wurde die Grundlage eines neuen Zweigs der Mathematik: der Statistik. Laut ihren Berechnungen sollten 1765 58.348 Pfund in ihrem Fonds sein. Ein Pfund fehlte, sie lagen genau richtig.
