The Wash ist ein Ästuar, das durch die Mündungen der Flüsse Witham , Welland, Nene und Great Ouse in die Nordsee gebildet wird. Er liegt an der Ostküste Englands auf etwa 53° nördl. Breite und 0–1° östl. Länge.
Das Ästuar bildet eine weite Einbuchtung der Ostküste Englands und trennt den Küstenabschnitt East Anglias von jenem Lincolnshires. Er besteht aus jeweils drei Streifen zu je 25 Kilometern Länge. Die Ostküste des Ästuars gehört vollständig zu Norfolk und verbreitert sich ausgehend von Hunstanton im Norden bis zur Mündung des Great Ouse bei King’s Lynn im Süden. Die gegenüberliegende, überwiegend zur östlichen parallel verlaufenden Küste erstreckt sich vom Gibraltar Point bis zur Mündung des Welland und gehört gänzlich zu Lincolnshire. Die Südküste verläuft überwiegend in NW-SO-Richtung und verbindet dabei beide Flussmündungen. Auf halber Länge mündet hier der Nene als dritter Fluss in das Ästuar.
