Der Chwarel Ddu Steinbruch war der früheste Schiefersteinbruch im Lledr-Tal. Er war vor 1810 in Betrieb und blieb bis in die späten 1920er Jahre sporadisch in Betrieb. Er liegt etwa 0,5 Meilen westlich von Dolwyddelan, direkt unterhalb von Dolwyddelan Castle.
Es wird angenommen, dass der Steinbruch zwischen 1800 und 1805 eröffnet wurde. 1810 war der Steinbruch so erfolgreich, dass das Gwydir Estate, das das Land besaß, auf dem der Steinbruch lag, eine Wagenstraße vom Steinbruch zur Holyhead Road in Conwy errichtete. Dies ist now Teil der A470. Trotz dieses frühen Erfolgs betrieb der Steinbruch nur in kurzen Zeiträumen über die nächsten Jahrzehnte. In den späten 1850er Jahren produzierte er mehrere Jahre lang bedeutende Mengen an Schiefer, bis zu 700 Tonnen pro Jahr. Zu dieser Zeit wurde eine stationäre Dampfmaschine verwendet, um Gestein aus der Grube zu fördern. Bis 1888 war er erneut geschlossen.
