Porcari liegt etwa 10 Kilometer östlich der Provinzhauptstadt Lucca und 52 km westlich der Regionalhauptstadt Florenz in der Luccheser Ebene in der klimatischen Einordnung italienischer Gemeinden in der Zone D, 1 676 GG.
Porcari wird in erstmals in einem langobardischen Dokument von 780 erwähnt. Der Ort lag an der Via Francigena und der Via Cassia. Seit dem 11. Jahrhundert hatte Porcari eine Burg. Sie diente bis in das 15. Jahrhundert der Verteidigung Luccas und wurde später abgetragen. Politisch gehörte Porcari zu Lucca und kam mit diesem Gebiet schließlich zu Italien.
Seit 1913 ist Porcari selbständige Gemeinde, vorher gehörte der Ort zu Capannori.
