Syrakus war der Geburtsort des Mathematikers, Ingenieurs, Wissenschaftlers und Astronomen Archimedes, des Erfinders der Archimedischen Schraube. Er war auch als Archimedes von Syrakus bekannt.
Archimedes starb hier laut einigen im Jahr 212 v. Chr. Plutarch berichtete, dass Archimedes ein mathematisches Diagramm betrachtete, als die Stadt erobert wurde. Ein römischer Soldat forderte ihn auf, zu kommen und General Marcellus zu treffen, aber er lehnte ab und sagte, dass er das Problem fertigstellen müsse. Der Soldat war darüber wütend und tötete Archimedes mit seinem Schwert.
