Die Fürstenburg wurde im 13. Jahrhundert bei Burgeis als Sitz der Fürstbischöfe von Chur erbaut. Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung fand 1292 durch Bischof Berthold II. statt . Heute beherbergt die Burg, die sich in Südtirol befindet, eine Fachschule für Land- und Forstwirtschaft.
Nach einem Einsturz des Turmes 1996 wurde ein Ausbau durch den damaligen Direktor Georg Flora angestoßen. Das Konzept des Architekten Werner Tscholl beinhaltete die komplexe Sanierung und Modernisierung der Anlage ohne die Bestandsanlage irreversibel zu verändern. Es wurden lediglich architektonische Elemente oder Anbauten hinzugefügt.
