Die Kirche Madonna della Catena wurde ursprünglich etwa tausend Schritte von der Ostmauer der Stadt entfernt erbaut. Obwohl das genaue Baudatum nicht bekannt ist, ist aus Dokumenten bekannt, dass es bereits im Jahr 1545 existierte.
Aufgrund der Entfernung dieser Kirche von der Stadt und der beschwerlichen Anfahrt, insbesondere in den Wintermonaten, beschlossen die Mitglieder dieser Gemeinde, die Kirche auf eigene Kosten an einem stadtnäheren Ort wieder aufzubauen. Zu diesem Zweck kauften sie 1661 das Kloster Santa Chiara ab und gründeten unter ihrem Schutz die neue Kirche Santa Maria della Catena.
Im Inneren der Kirche befindet sich ein Gemälde des Alcamo-Malers Giuseppe Renda aus dem Jahr 1799 , das die Madonna della Catena darstellt
