Die niederländische Fahrradinsel Texel wurde von National Geographic als die 12. schönste Insel der Welt aus einer Liste von 111 ausgewählt. Die erste auf der Liste waren die Färöer-Inseln.
Texel wurde auch als Wohnort von Jan Wolkers gewählt, der am 19. Oktober 2007 im Alter von 81 Jahren starb. Er zog 1981 in den Weiler Westermient.
