De Heerlijkheid was built on the former Norbertine abbey Marienweerd. After the Reformation, the abbey estates were initially managed by the Provincial Executive of the Quarter of Nijmegen, which, however, decided to sell them in the early 18th century. In 1734 Mariënwaerdt came into the hands of the Van Bylandt family, where it also received the status of high lordship. Descendants of this family are still owners of the extensive estate. The current manor house was built between 1734 and 1790. Under the house, the medieval refectory of the old abbey is still preserved.
