Die Neustraße in Herzogenrath bzw. Nieuwstraat in Kerkrade teilt die seit über 800 Jahren zusammengewachsenen Städte und bildet gleichzeitig die Staatsgrenze zwischen Deutschland und den Niederlanden. Bis zur Liberalisierung des Grenzverkehrs war sie ein Zentrum niederländisch-deutschen Grenzschmuggels. Erst nach jahrzehntelangen Protesten der Bevölkerung wurde auf ein Grenzhindernis in der Mitte der Straße verzichtet.
