Die 'Schlacht um den Schatten', beschrieben von A. Korthals Altes in dem gleichnamigen Buch, fand auf dem Gebiet der Gemeinden Asten, Deurne, Nederweert und (damals) Meijel statt. Nachdem die 7. US-Panzerdivision gegen eine deutsche Übermacht standgehalten hatte, war es an der 15. Schottischen Division, zusammen mit den Amerikanern das Umland von deutschen Soldaten zu befreien. Bei diesen Kämpfen verloren viele Hundert Soldaten ihr Leben. Die Deurnese Kirchdörfer Liessel und Neerkant trauerten zudem um zahlreiche zivile Opfer. 1992 wurde in Liessel dieses würdige Denkmal für alle Kriegsopfer errichtet.
