Der 49. Eurovision Song Contest fand am 12. und 15. Mai 2004 in Istanbul unter dem Motto Under the Same Sky statt. Er war die bis dahin größte Veranstaltung im Rahmen dieses Wettbewerbs; 36 Länder nahmen teil. Moderiert wurden die Sendungen von Meltem Cumbul und Korhan Abay.
Der deutsche Teilnehmer wurde in der Sendung Germany 12 Points! gekürt: Es war Max Mutzke mit Can’t Wait Until Tonight, der am Ende den achten Platz belegte. Die Vertreter Österreichs Tie Break mit Du bist wurden nur 21. Die Schweiz musste mit null Punkten bereits aus dem Semifinale ausscheiden, Sänger Piero Esteriore ließ sich am Tag danach eine Glatze schneiden. Das Lied Celebrate! sollte das bis 2011 letzte Schweizer Lied sein, das per Vorentscheidung gewählt wurde. Aufgrund der anhaltend schlechten Ergebnisse war sogar ein vollständiger Rückzug der Schweiz von Grand Prix im Gespräch.
