Am 11. September 2001 wurde eine Boeing 767-200 auf dem United-Airlines-Flug 175 als zweites von vier Flugzeugen in den USA von fünf Terroristen entführt und um 9:03 Uhr in den Südturm des World Trade Centers in New York City gelenkt. In den benachbarten Nordturm war zuvor schon American-Airlines-Flug 11 gelenkt worden. Der Südturm hielt der Wirkung des Einschlags kürzer stand und stürzte nach 56 Minuten ein. Alle 65 Insassen des Flugzeugs und ca. 600 Personen im Südturm starben bei der Kollision und dem anschließenden Einsturz. Die fünf Entführer waren Marwan Al-Shehhi , Hamsa Alghandi, Ahmed Alghandi, Fayez Banihammad und Mohand Alsheri.
Die Boeing 767 sollte planmäßig um 8:00 Uhr EDT vom Logan International Airport in Boston zu einem Linienflug zum Los Angeles International Airport starten. Tatsächlich verließ das Flugzeug um 7:59 Uhr das Gate, musste aber in einer Halteposition bis zur Startfreigabe um 8:14 Uhr warten.
