Schloss Traunsee is located in the municipality of Altmünster in the Gmunden district on Traunsee in Upper Austria.
Schloss Traunsee was built between 1872 and 1875 by Duke Philipp of Württemberg as a summer villa for his wife Archduchess Maria Theresa. Archduchess Maria Theresa was a granddaughter of Archduke Karl, the victor of the Battle of Aspern. The building was therefore named Villa Maria Theresa, but it has also become known as Schloss Württemberg in the Traunsee region. After the death of Duke Philipp, the castle passed into the ownership of Duchess Marie Therese. In 1927, it was sold to the sons Robert and Ulrich. During and after World War I, it was used as a refugee camp and as a hospital. In 1935, it was leased to the Landesverband für Fremdenverkehr in Linz, and from 1938 it was transferred to the provincial governor's office of the Gau Oberdonau.
