Sint Amandus founded two abbeys in the year 630 at the location where Ghent later emerged. The St. Bavo's Abbey was situated at the confluence of the Lys and Scheldt (the old Celtic name Ganda actually means mouth), while St. Peter's Abbey was located further south, on the Blandijnberg. During the 9th century, a trading settlement formed around St. Bavo's Abbey, but it was later destroyed by the Normans.
