The Black Gang was a feared crime gang from the Galmaarden area during the First World War. She was so named because the members blackened their faces before setting out to commit crimes. Often they also disguised themselves as Germans. The gang was guilty of murder, extortion, burglary, theft and it seemed as if they enjoyed protection from above. Most of their crimes ended up in a cover-up and were never clarified. The population remained silent for fear of reprisals. The author Karl Delauw wrote a book about it: 'The Crimes of the Black Gang of Galmaarden'. He hopes the stories won't be forgotten.
