West Flanders is the only Belgian province located on the coast. The western and northern part of the province mainly consists of the flat Polders, intersected in the west by the river IJzer, which flows into the sea at Nieuwpoort. The interior is less flat, and in the south lies the West Flanders Hill Country, with the highest peak being the Kemmelberg (156 m). The southeast of the province is crossed by the river Leie, which flows further into East Flanders. In the far southeast, the border of the province is formed by the Schelde.
