The city is located on the Maas, about 30 km upstream from Maastricht.
Halfway through the 20th century, Liège was the center of mining and steel industry, which brought prosperity to Wallonia. The economic problems that later in the century were the result of the decline in the importance of mining and the steel industry have not missed their effect on the surroundings of Liège.
The University of Liège (Université de Liège, abbreviation ULg) was founded during the time of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands under William I and officially inaugurated in 1817.
