In the 13th century, Cistercian monks built the St. Bernardus Abbey in Hemiksem. With the French Revolution, the monks were driven out. The abbey became national property and served as a maritime hospital, prison, and military depot. As part of the Sigma Plan, the Benedenvliet was disconnected from the Scheldt, and a drainage sluice and waiting basin were constructed at the mouth. Previously, the Vliet had long been an important waterway and navigable up to Cleydaal. Listen and sail along with the 17th-century monk Servaes in a story by Arnd Van Meirvenne.
This story is part of the Sound Waves cycling route of HOOGTIJ! Celebration in River Park Scheldevallei and Tourism Rupel region.
