3.3 km, WALKING FROM TIME-OUT GENOELS ALONG VINEYARDS WITH A VIEW OF THE CASTLE.
We did this walk with our friends Greet, Armand, and Saartje.
We set off with our backs to Time-Out and walk towards the wine castle via Sint Maartenstraat.
After just a few meters, turn right onto Millerstraat and then immediately left into Melkerijstraat.
At the y, keep right towards the fields. We are off!!
Follow this winding road until the end of the vineyard.
This vineyard of nearly six hectares is planted in an area where vineyards used to exist.
Here is where winemaking in the region has endured the longest,
up to the time of Napoleon. In the land registry established by Napoleon, this parcel is recorded as ‘vineyard field’.
Then take a left, continue walking along the edge of the Grootbos until you reach the concrete field road.
Here take a left, you will see a water tower hidden among the greenery on your right.
The water tower in Herderen was built in 1930 and contains a water reservoir with a capacity of 155 cubic meters.
The tower has held protected monument status since March 14, 2000.
Keep walking until you reach a barrier (usually closed, sometimes open).
BEFORE the barrier, walk right along the forest.
Then left and then back right, always keeping along the forest (on your left side).
At the next T, you will go left into the forest. Go under the barrier and then turn immediately right.
Steep downhill and then at the end of the forest, turn left; the forest is on your left side and the fields are on the right.
Follow this dirt road until you reach the concrete field road. Turn left over the Wijerkensbeek.
Follow the concrete road, passing house number 115 and then turn right.
Enjoy the view of the Wine Castle of Genoelselderen.
Castle Genoels-Elderen is the largest vineyard estate in Belgium, with its 22 hectares of vineyards.
In 1990, the van Rennes family revived this centuries-old wine culture.
Since then, the wine grape has returned completely to this beautiful landscape around the Castle of Genoels-Elderen.
On the best slopes of the Limburg hills, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines were planted from 1991 onwards.
At the T, turn left and this will take you back to Time-Out.
